Capoeira is a new found love I now have. Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art. It is like a defensive dance. Capoeira is made up of different rhythms and songs that we move to. Music has always been a big part of my life so capoeira reflects who I am. My mom one day signed me up to take classes with Professeur Paul-Raymond Buitrón III of the Buitrón Academy located in Laredo, Texas. Mr. Buitrón is one of my greatest heroes.
Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that consists of two opponents surrounded by a circle of people that are playing music and singing. The two opponents play fight to the rhythm of the berimbau. The berimbau looks like a bow with a metal wire attached. Other players can play other instruments along with the berimbau like a large drum called the atabaque, a medium sized tambourine called the pandeiro, and a small bell called the a-go-go. Others can also participate and sing while people play.
In the class I take, since we are all learning and we are all friends, we play nicely with each other. That is different from the real world where we would have to defend ourselves using capoeira. We learn the different techniques of the game and all the kicks, punches, and blocks that go along with it.
I think capoeira is an amazing sport. I admire the players and I hope to continue learning capoeira. I am proud of my teacher and he is a great role model I follow. I love capoeria and I am very grateful to be able to participate in this memorable and historic martial art.
