Staying at Home

  • Spring Break is around the corner!

Not everyone can afford or has the time to travel during Spring Break. For those students who are staying home, The Bridge has some quick ideas for a fun vacation at home.

Even on a tight budget, a few friends and some pooled money can make any of the following ideas happen without too many difficulties.

Pool Party – Fun in the sun doesn't just happen at the beach. A few friends, a pool, and some cool beverages can make any afternoon seem like a vacation. Everyone can pitch in for some snacks, or if there is a grill nearby, an experienced griller can put together some hot dogs or burgers. In order to let people know of the upcoming party, students can send free online invitations.

Movie Night – Instead of heading to the theater, make it movie night at home. Rent a movie from the local video store or from a nearby Redbox, where rentals cost a dollar a night. To make it even more fun, have an all night movie marathon. Each person can choose a movie they like, and everyone can spend the night watching all the different movies. To more closely resemble an experience at the movie theater, students can buy a box of popcorn and some drinks at the local grocery store. These movie theater snacks would be less expensive and would feed a bigger group of people.

Hometown Tourism – Students can be surprised to discover places within their hometown that they have never visited. Spring Break is a good time to act like a tourist within the city. Students can spend a few days sampling new shops or restaurants.

Camping – Students won't have to worry about the cost of hotels if they choose to sleep outdoors. Most families have a sleeping bag or tent that students can use to camp out. Students can travel to a nearby wildlife park and spend days fishing, kayaking, or just enjoying the outdoors. A backyard can be an alternative location to camping in a park or wooded area. S'mores and scary stories in someone's backyard may seem childish to some students, but they can serve as a way to relax and de-stress from the previous worries of classes.

Road Trip – All students need for a road trip is a reliable vehicle, a map, friends, and a bit of money. Along the way, students can stay with friends or relatives or find comfortable hotels for a low price or group rates. With road trips, students can travel wherever they choose and take as many last minute detours as they like.

Spring Break doesn't have to be about going to the most expensive places or drinking as much alcohol as possible. Memories can be made through inexpensive adventures with a few good friends.
