Viva Mexico
On Wednesday September 15, 2010, CAB, Campus Activities Board, CAB, organized the Mexico 200th Bicentenario Birthday Celebration with El Grito at the Lamar Bruni Vergara Garden in front of the Student Success Center patio. The festivity started at 6:30 p.m. with tables set up with Mexican food and traditional drinks in commemoration of El Dia Del Grito.
The Lamar Bruni Vergara garden was decorated with traditional Mexican colors, red, green and white paper Mache. The celebration hostesses wore beautiful skirts with embroidery. Mariachi music played as the guests gathered at tables and socialized. Aramark cooked and served tostadas with lettuce, tomato, sour cream, pico de gallo and salsa verde for the crowd. Elote Mexicano which is roasted corn with salsa and cheese was also prepared and served.
TAMIU students, staff, faculty and special guests waited in line to taste the delicious tostadas and corn.
The food was full of flavor and spices; guests made double trips to the tables for seconds. "It's a great event; it shows Mexican culture and its traditions; the Aguas Frescas are delicious" said TAMIU senior, Diego Aranda. The typical Mexican aguas frescas are made of fresh water and
sugar mixed with real fruit juices of limones, melon, naranja, pineapple pina and other fruits. As the guests socialized and ate the delicious food, the Ballet the Folklorico prepared
for their performance. The Dancers were introduced and then performed for the public. The Ballet de Folklorico wore costumes with embroidery and colorful feathers.
The Mexico 200th Birthday celebration was at the garden united students, faculty, staff and guests together to celebrate an important day for Mexicans and Mexican-Americans. CAB organized the event to honor the Mexican Day of Independence for those students who have
