Safety First
Have you ever had that "scare" of being pregnant or thinking you got someone pregnant? If so, there is a way to prevent the "scare". Contraception is the easiest and most convenient way to prevent an unintended pregnancy. It is important to talk about the methods of preventing pregnancy and also having access to effective, affordable, and safe contraception for individuals who decide to engage in intercourse.
Forms of contraception are condoms, birth control, injections, the patch, implants (eg. Nuvaring & Linel), female condoms, spermicides, contraceptive sponges, and cervical caps. The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy website provides this information and more http://www.sexreally.com/about-us. If you have questions about the method to use check with the Student Health Services, your nurse practitioner, or your doctor to discuss what is best for you.
Many contraceptive products can be obtained at any pharmacy or health clinics includingTexas A&M International University Student Health Services. Research tells us that 19% of girls aged 15-19, 9% of young women aged 20-24, and 6% of women aged 25-29 that are not using a contraceptive method are at risk for pregnancy. Practicing safe and adequate sexual activity can prevent unplanned pregnancies.
For further information on contraceptives you can visit our student health services at the Student Center, room 125, or you can call to setup an appointment at 956 326-2235.
