Jalapeño Festival draws hundreds of Laredoans

Hundreds of spectators gathered under Friday night floodlights not to cheer in support of of the Mustangs, Tigers or Longhorns, but instead to celebrate the spicy little pepper that plays an integral part of any Laredoan’s diet.

The 37th JalapeñoFestival is one of the main attractions that brings out-of-towners to the border city to test their metttle in a Jalapeño eating contest.

This year the champion,  Jose Antonio Machan, chomped his way to victory, consuming 76 Jalapeños in the span of 15
minutes.

For festival-goers who didn’t quite have Machan’s champion stomach, a variety of booths provided snacks ranging from gorditas to funnel cakes and even fried desserts such as oreos and whole snickers bars.

Of course, the cusine wasn’t the only thing to enjoy at the Jalapeño Festival. Two stages of music hosted acts from as far as Nashville, Tenn. One stage hosted rock acts — including Bright Light Social Hour and Tyler & The Northern Lights —  while the other was mostly comprised of Tejano artists — including Zapata’s own Norteño legends Intocable  — giving both music lovers of different tastes a thrilling soundtrack to accompany their memorable night.
