National Coming Out Day
On Monday Oct. 11, 2010, the Texas A & M International University's Gay Straight Alliance observed National Coming Out Day. The organization held an informational fair from 11 a.m. until1 p.m. on the TAMIU Green.
The group gathered with some informational brochures provided by the counseling center, as well as some lollipops with an attached note of the groups' Facebook website. The most eye catching feature of booth was the rainbow flag that proudly hung above the group.
Despite the group's well mannered temper and enthusiasm, they were met with some resistance and judgmental stares. The members took it upon themselves to simply offer a lollipop and brochure to passing individuals. The brochures provided people with definitions of different sexual orientations as well as tips on showing support toward questioning or confused individuals.
While some happily accepted, others were a bit startled and simply grinned in what appeared to be discomfort. Other students and faculty member blatantly avoided eye contact with any individual of the GSA, so as to avoid being spoken to. I feel that reason why so many people feel uncomfortable with the idea of others expressing their acceptance or pride in different sexual orientations is for both cultural and political reasons. Different is typically equated as a threat to the status quo.
I believe it is important to open ourselves up to the idea of being comfortable with differences in other individuals. In order to survive in this constantly changing world, one must embrace the concept of open mindedness.
