The Eye of London
Texas A&M International University encourages all to take the opportunity to study abroad. TAMIU offers the study abroad program, where students travel to all parts of the globe where they can experience and learn about the different cultures, food, and traditions first-hand.
Juan Jose Martinez Jr. is one of these many students who were accepted into the study abroad program. Originally from Carrizo Springs, Texas, Juan came to TAMIU to pursue a bachelor's degree in Psychology and is currently in his junior year. For the past two months he has been attending Richmond, The American International University of London, and has visited many of London's historical monuments.
Juan biggest challenge to study abroad began just like any other, having enough money to fund his studies. He did whatever he could to fund his expenses, he added "from trying to increase financial aid, to scholarships, to menudo sales, to only having 20 dollars left from my paycheck at Convergys, to personal loans my parents got out, to even a generous loan from a brother." He explained, "I had thought with all these obstacles I wasn't going to make it, but with the help from my family and friends I am here today standing tall in this beautiful city of London," knowing it was a wise investment in his future.
When asked about some of the differences between Richmond and TAMIU Mr. Martinez replied "The University is split into two campuses." He explained that lower division classes are located on the main campus, while the higher divisions are located near the center of London. Juan included that even though the university is separate, the classes are not hard to find. Juan also stated, "The University has a beautiful front lawn, and the campus reminds me of a castle."
Though he loves his experience in England, there is a few things he misses back home. Juan stated, "I had to leave behind family, brothers, friends, and even my girlfriend." He thanks them all so much for helping him and said his girlfriend was his main inspiration to follow his dreams. Other things he included where to local Franchise such as Whataburger and Taco Palenque. Also, all the campus events he has attended are not the traditional ones he is use to. On that note he stated "Speaking of campuses I miss having one campus to go to."
He stays connected with everyone though it is difficult since he wants to avoid those dreaded roaming charges. He stays in contact information with his family thanks to Facebook and Skype. One thing he emphasized was the use of his iTouch, he explained "The app allows me to use my Google number and use the Wi-Fi to contact both cellular and landline numbers in the US."
There were several other differences he noticed about the culture. He stated, "Culture well what can I say business attire is worn on the daily basis, for woman they are always wearing fashionable clothing." He mentioned that everyone is allowed to smoke any where they please unless it's stated by the business owner to smoke outside.
He had some final words for those who would like to study in London. He emphasized to save money due to the US dollars is low in English Pounds. He stated, "know how to spend wisely, and use your money for needs not wants, you will have plenty of time for that later. He recommends taking a bus and tube, and gets an oyster card which saves you money. He added "above all come to London with an open mind, I think it's a beautiful city."
Juan's expected return date is May 12, where he will be reunited with his family and friends. He has visited and experienced many things during his stay at London. After he returns, he will plan out to one day visit the city of London one more time.
