Back to the Future
Texas A&M International University exhibited the opening event of "Back to the Future"Gallery on Thursday March 8, 2012. The Department of Fine and Performing arts showed various art works and offered food from 6pm to 7:30pm free of charge for all the students and the public. Since past galleries have been from local artist, this time the Art Department decided to bring art from outside Laredo in order to expose the students to new kinds of work, styles, and technique. As David Bogus, the Co-Director, stated, "Is a teaching tool for students, not only get to show work in the gallery, but they also get to see artist come and see the artists work."
The Art Department in TAMIU set up a call in several publications in order to find art works related to the theme Back to the Future. Inventions, Robots, Modernity, Science Fiction, and Artificial Intelligence are some of the subject that many artists develop on their art and this was the time to exhibit their work. The process to participate in this gallery took place in Juried Art Services, an online website. The Idea of putting this show came up in about October of 2011 and David Bogus obtained the idea of setting a National jury show where the gallery could collect part of the fee to help their own Department, though, Nicole Foran, another Co-Director, was the actual theme producer.
Artists from all around the United States were charge a $25 entry fee to submit from one to four pieces to the jury show before November 1, 2011. Then the works were selected and graded by the juror, Bruce , the former Brownsville school design. After the scores were finalized David Bogus and Nicole Foran selected the art works from higher score for the Gallery. Of 290 artists that applied just 40 artists were selected for exhibition where they get the opportunity to sell their works.
Works from Alison Starr, Tammie Rubin, Greg Orloff, Jeffrey Thurston, Benjamin Johnson, Chris Bathgate, Kubo Kubo, and more were in exhibition. They varied from paintings, to photographs, even sculptures of all types of materials and detailed forms where the visitor may even interact and feel how the future would be like.
The show will be in exhibition until April 6, 2012 for any student or the public. For the Gallery to open the public just have to ask for an assistant to open the door at the Fine and Performing Art Department in room CFPA 217B or call (956) 326-2654
