Winners Recognized at the Juried Student Art Show
Art Review
Texas A&M International University along with ArtInk held their annual juried student art. The reception took place on Thursday, Dec. 2, 2010 at the TAMIU Fine and Performing Arts Center Gallery. The reception began at 5 p.m. and ended at 7:30 p.m.
Mikki Rodriguez was appointed as the judge for the show, but unfortunately was unable to attend the reception. The overall show had a great turn out and as soon as you walked into the gallery you were able to view art work in all different types of media such as painting, sculpture, print making, drawing, mixed media, etc. The gallery was filled with different talent from TAMIU students.
There was a performance piece by Jessica Tovar. She was dressed in black from head to toe and had several white clothes pins clipped to her body. The clothes pins were white and each had a few words and phrases written on them. She said that each pin was a part of a bad story from her summer that she wanted to share. Some of the phrases were in English and Spanish and read, "and supposedly an" "we're in mom's truck" and "a una temprana edad." She asked that everyone take a clothes pin from her while she walked through the gallery.
The awards ceremony began shortly after the performance. Alma Haertlein announced those that received honorable mentions for their art work. The honorable mention recipients were Kayla Camacho (installation), Daniel Vera (photography), Ricardo Guerrero (sculpture), Teresita dela Torre (mixed media), Alejandra Gomez (painting), Enrique Botello (printmaking), and Leslie Dunn (drawing). The first place winner was Ricardo Guerrera, second place went to Alejandra Calderon, and third place went to Vanessa Castillo. The Best in Show went to Hugo Portida for his Prisma Marker on Gesso.
If you would like to see some local talent from the students of TAMIU, stop by the art gallery in the FPAC. For more information about the show you can contact Alma Haertlein at 956-326-3041 or email her at almah@tamiu.edu.
