Last Thursday, Aug. 26, Housing and Residence Life hosted the third annual Club Villagio to welcome their new and returning residents.  The event took place at the University Village, and it had residents from both properties dancing to several musical genres from 9 to 12 a.m.  The idea behind Club Villagio was to get residents out of their room and into a social scene where they could perhaps meet their future best friend, classmate, teammate, or suitemate.

Underneath the club set up of lounge sofas, black dramatic curtains, exhilarating lights and pumping music, Club Villagio's mission was to educate.  "We want to educate our residents of the importance of having fun without alcohol,"says Mirasol Tabarez, Assistant Director of Residence Life.

Although the set up simulates the nocturnal life of a typical weekend at a club, for residents and student population, it was recreated in a "safe and fun environment without alcohol," says Tabarez.

There were no alcoholic beverages served at the event but residents had a blast dancing and hanging out with their friends. This was reinforced by several RLC and Village residents, among them Maria De La Cruz who said, "There is no need to consume alcohol to have fun when you can dance with your friends all night."

Believe it or not, events like Club Villagio encourage residents to think twice about the choices they make during the weekends.  It is important that the University, not only the Housing department, promote safe events that motivate students to make smart choices in issues like alcohol consumption and partying.

After completing this event, the RAs set out to accomplish other missions that include sexual assault awareness throughout the month of September and Housing's Idol.
