2012 Mr. & Mrs. TAMIU
As Bridge reporter Cesar Sanchez, mentioned last week, the voting for Mr. and Mrs. TAMIU took place from January 30th to February 4th, 2012. Every student had an equal opportunity to vote online with an active TAMIU account. During its second year, Mr. and Mrs. TAMIU are elected students who win their position not based on beauty like other contests, but on dedication to the university. Jerry Alva declared to TAMIU, " Students agreed from the inception that this would not be a contest focused on appearance, but rather on two students who best exemplify a commitment to the Institution, and have an interest in promoting the University through academic excellence, student involvement and school pride," The crowd was pumped up this past Thursday February 2nd, at the 2012 Mr. & Mrs. TAMIU coronation. The event took place during halftime of the TAMIU men's basketball game, in the Kinesiology Convocation Building.
The audience was excited upon who would win, they impatiently waited throughout the game to hear who was the new Mr. and Mrs. TAMIU for the year of 2012. As each couple took their place in the middle of the court, their own respective crowd stood up and cheered their lungs out! Some of the contestants had their own cheer squad in the benches, which included family members and friends holding posters and banners.
The 2011 Mr. and Mrs. TAMIU were present to give out each placement at the event in order to give out each coronation. Third runner up was Jose Ramon Lara, senior nursing major, and Claudia Samaniego, junior Bilingual Generalist major. The second runner up couple was Carlos De Jesus Diaz, sophomore Business Administration major, and Guadalupe "Lupita" Osoria, junior Communication Disorders major. First runner up was the TAMIU soccer player Alejandro De La Fuente, senior Systems Engineering major, and Raquel Urrutia, sophomore Communication major.
One by one, each couple received a bouquet of flowers with an award recognizing their placement; each of the couples occupied a place at the opposite side of the court in accordance with their placement. One by one, the couples started taking their place at the opposite side, until three of the couples were gone and there were only two students left. The winners of the 2012 Mr. and Mrs. TAMIU elections were instantly revealed. The new 2012 Mr. TAMIU is Jonathan David Gutierrez, junior English and Political Science major; and 2012 Ms. TAMIU, Roxanne Saldana, senior Early Childhood Education major.
